* Micronutrients & Vegan Omega-3 for fertility Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction. Folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, magnesium, and calcium play a role in cell division. Folic acid contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy. An additional intake of folic acid increases the folate status of the mother. A low maternal folate status is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Women of childbearing age achieve this beneficial effect with an additional daily intake of 400 μg of folic acid for at least one month before and up to three months after conception. Zinc, magnesium, and calcium contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. Iodine and selenium contribute to normal thyroid function. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin. The intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by the mother contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the fetus and breastfed infants. The positive effect is obtained with a daily intake of 200 mg DHA in addition to the recommended daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids for adults, i.e., 250 mg DHA and EPA.
