Haematopoiesis (Blood Formation)
From Dr. med. Michalzik®
Haematopoiesis (Blood Formation) The majority of our blood cells are formed in the bone marrow. Our blood cells have a limited lifespan and must be constantly renewed. Our body produces several billion new blood cells every day. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are needed for normal blood formation. Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein complex that gives our red blood cells their characteristic red color. Functional hemoglobin is centrally important for us because it binds oxygen in the blood. Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and hemoglobin.
